Increase in the number of referees in Bavaria

The most contentious position in football? Once a profession that promised respect and recognition, the role of the referee has faced challenges in recent years. However, in Bavaria, a hopeful picture emerges: the numbers of referees are on the rise.
The Increase Explained: Statistics and Facts
In 2023, the number of referees in Bavaria reached a four-year high. With an increase of 6.2%, the figure has risen to 10,254 active officials, including 1,431 new registrations – a record number. These figures mark a turning point after years of decline.
Background: Why More Referees?
The turnaround is not by chance but the result of strategic efforts by the Bavarian Football Association (BFV). It stems from a series of initiatives that not only make the position of the referee more attractive but also increase recognition for this essential role in football, according to the BFV. Robert Schraudner, BFV Vice President, emphasises that the 'Year of the Refs' was used to enhance the attractiveness of the referee’s role. A variety of measures, including higher compensation and a new calculation of required numbers for clubs, have led to increased appreciation and a more attractive design of the referee profession. A key aspect of these efforts is the mentorship system, which supports newcomers and integrates them into the referee community. In 2023 alone, 1,009 newcomers were mentored through this program, strengthening the community and support network.
Outlook: The Ongoing Need for Referees
While the latest figures are promising, the continuous recruitment and retention of referees remain a focus. The BFV's inventory indicates that the efforts are bearing fruit: the number of referees stepping down has dropped by 33%.
